"A Way With Words" Raises $2200 for Gibsons Library Foundation
The fourth annual "A Way With Words" competition raised about $2,200 for the Gibsons & District Library Foundation on Sunday
Thirty-six contestants, competing in teams of three at the Gibsons & District Community Centre, vied for book prizes donated by Harbour Publishing and Lone Pine Publishing.
The creative word-building games used Scrabble tiles, but this was not a conventional Scrabble tournament. The first game, "Famous Canadians," was won by Judith Hammill, Natasha Rosewood and Roger Swickis. "Criss-cross" winners were Marvin and Joan Friesen and Jerry Coulson. Donna McMahon, Brenna Johnson and Heidi Zurbrugg took the third game, "Compound Words," and Pat Stuart, Jeannie Barwise and Marney Qually scored a narrow victory in the last contest, "Big Words."
Foundation member John McNevin received one of the book prizes for raising more than $1,000 through pledges from various community members. The prizes were presented by Foundation Chair Lynda Coote.
The Gibsons & District Library Foundation is a registered charitable organization that assists the library in providing services and programs.
