16 Teams Match Word-building Skills in Gibsons Library Foundation Event
What do buttermilk, Nero Wolfe, Don Quixote and Eliza Doolittle have in common? These words, and dozens of others, were all used in the third annual "A Way With Words" competition hosted by the Gibsons & District Library Foundation May 25 at the new Gibsons Community Centre.
Sixteen teams competed in four word-building games (usually using Scrabble tiles) and along the way raised almost $1000 for the Library Foundation www.gibsonslibraryfoundation.org. Book prizes donated by Harbour Publishing were presented to the four winning teams by Library Foundation chair Lynda Coote, who also gave a book prize to John McNevin for bringing in $350 in pledges.
In the first game, Ian and Cindy Dayneswood somehow came up with more than 100 words of three letters or more using only the letters in the word "buttermilk."
Wolfe, Quixote and Doolittle were among dozens of literacy characters spelled out with Scrabble tiles in the second game, won by Peter and Linda Reid and Cheryl Baron.
Other winners were Donna McMahon and Brenna Johnson ("Countries") and Maureen Collins and Mary-Anne Thiessen ("Around The Board").
Refreshments were provided by Starbucks (Gibsons) and Library Foundation members.
The word-building games were created by Library Foundation Secretary Vern Giesbrecht, who is already devising new challenges for the next "A Way With Words" event.
