CODE FAMILY WINS "A WAY WITH WORDS"
Linda, Dave and Katherine Code won three of six word-building games to take top honours at the second annual "A Way With Words" competition at Harmony Hall, Gibsons, on Sunday.
Their word wizardry prevailed over the skills of nine other teams in the unique contests hosted by the Gibsons & District Library Foundation.
Second place went to Wendy Miller, Donna McMahon and Roger Swickis, all members of the Gibsons Library Board. The third-place team featured Shawn Cardinal, Judith Hamill and Lynnette Robinson.
The top three teams all won gift certificates (donated by Gibsons & District Public Library) for the book chosen for the library's "Coast Reads One Book" promotion, The Long Run by Leo Furey.
Teams used Scrabble tiles to race against the clock in such tasks as listing animals starting with each letter of the alphabet ("u" and "x" were daunting, but one team knew "xerus," an African ground squirrel) and using at least 90 tiles in the fewest words possible ("quintessentially" was one of the more impressive long words used).
Winners of each individual game received chocolates donated by Barbara Wells of the library foundation. The Codes, who won three times, and the Miller/McMahon/Swickis entry, which won two of the games, graciously allowed runners-up to take home some of the chocolate prizes. The team of Karen Esplen, Ruth Allan and Gail Schulz won the second game, "Water, Water Everywhere." Runner-up teams winning prizes included the Cardinal/Hamill/Robinson trio, the team of Pat Stuart, Marney Qually and Jeannie Barwise, and the team of Barbara Wells, Maureen Collins and Jennie Tschoban.
Refreshments were donated by Starbucks, Truffles, Wheatberries and library foundation directors.
